ACTIVITY 1

ACTIVITY: THE NEED FOR ENJOYMENT

By: Zulhilmi Zainuddin (13th March 2013)

Teaching and learning will not always be fun for certain students. It all depends on their interest of the topic, the way of teachers’ delivery and even students’ readiness in learning. When students find that a lesson is getting boring, they start to lose their focus and easily distracted by the unimportant elements in their surroundings. For this matter, students need activities which are full with enjoyment and able to re-attract their attention (C. M. Charles, 2004).

Most importantly, they even need activities which come in form of movement and mini game that can utilize their extra energy; rather than be sitting on their chair for the whole lesson. The expected time for this activity is just for five minutes in the middle of the lesson and it surely does not interrupt the whole topic of the learning. Therefore, this is the suggested activity or energizer for teachers to develop enjoyment in a lesson:

SAMPLE OF ACTIVITY:

TitleBuild It with Your Group!

Situation: While teacher is teaching, students start to be distracted and losing their focus. Thus the teachers will have to attract the students’ attentions.

Steps:
1.    Teacher asks pupils to stand up and stretch their body with simple exercise such as rising hands to the sky, squeezing the air, bringing hands to the front, back and down.

2.    Teacher divides pupils into group of six and draw columns on the whiteboard as the scoreboard. Instruct them to be in their group silently or their mark will be deducted on the scoreboard.

3.    Once students are all in their group, teacher explains that they are going to play a game called Build It with Your Group! Teacher just stands at the front and all groups are instructed to be at the side of the classroom.

4.    Teacher explains that the main rule is to be silent or else they are failures.

5.    In their group, teacher asks them to form shape (triangle, rectangle, square, and circle), animals (cat, snake, duck, and snail), furniture (chair, table, bed, and cupboard) and etcetera.

6.    Groups that manage to form the things above in silence and most similar to the original things will be awarded with high marks.

7.    Teacher repeats the steps 5 and 6 above until it is five to seven minutes of the game.

8.    At the end of the game, teacher counts the mark written on the whiteboard and give a big round of applause to the winners. Teacher continues with the learning topic.

This is only a sample, for more sample of activities, you may browse from the internet or find books of Classroom and Behaviour Management for primary school students. Good Luck to become a successful Classroom CEO!!!
